Why Help?
We are seeking funding to purchase a highly needed medical device for non-surgical scoliosis treatment. Our daughter has a significant curve in her spine (nearly 50 degrees). She has faithfully worn a TLSO brace since she was eight, and it has made only a slight improvement. This type of brace is only static and does not make the muscles work to actually correct and maintain a lower level of curve. The doctors she has been going to say that her only option is having rods put in her back and fusing the spine. This is a major operation for a young teen and unfortunately, is a newer type of surgery. When we asked the orthopedic surgeon what the long term risks are, he said they do not know, as putting the rods in the back and fusing the spine is relatively new. He said that not many people over 60 years old have had this type of procedure so they are not sure of the long term risks. This was not comforting to us so we started seeking non-surgical procedures that are effective.
After extensive research we found that the Spinecor Brace supported by the The Schroth Method of intensive exercise classes is very effective for treating this degree of scoliosis. We immediately contacted the doctors that prescribe this brace and treatment in our area. After an in-depth discussion about our daughter's condition, they felt very confident that in time they could decrease it at least 15 degrees and maintain that degree range with the exercise program.
The costs of the x-rays, Spinecor Brace, Schroth Method intensive exercise classes and followup is over $7000. Although my wife and I both work, our jobs do not provide any insurance benefits and the insurance provided through the state for our children does not cover this medical treatment.
Our daughter is under 16 years old and has always been very active with sports, ballet, horseback riding, etc. She needs to be able to get this brace and treatment so that she can continue to enjoy her quality of life.
Thank you in advance for you kindness and generosity.
